Podiatry

NU Moves podiatryIn 2020, we are excited to introduce a podiatry service at NU Moves with a very qualified and experienced podiatrist Krista.

Podiatry is the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of lower limb biomechanical-related injuries and other issues, in both the sporting and general population.

Issues we commonly help with are:

  • plantar fasciitis
  • heel and arch pain
  • back, hip and knee pain related to poor foot posture
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • metatarsalgia (sore balls of feet)
  • stress fractures
  • shin splints
  • bunions

We can also help with the management of painful corns and ingrown toenails when this is starting to impact on your ability to comfortably walk or exercise.

Pressure plate analysis     pressure plate assessment

Our podiatrist assesses the function of your lower limb during walking and running, and uses a number of other functional tests to identify the factors involved in your injury or issues. Exercise and sport can lead to repetitive forces on the lower limb structures (bone, muscle, tendon, ligament). Small inefficiencies in your alignment and movement can lead to the development of overloading and injury if left untreated.

Early intervention strategies to prevent more serious issues, such as stress fractures, can include:

  • Customised and lightweight flexible orthotics
  • Muscle stretching and strengthening
  • Footwear advice or prescription
  • Foot/ankle padding and strapping
  • Running technique modification

We take a modern approach to orthotics. We believe that for injury prevention and management, the foot should be allowed to function within a normal range of motion, assisted by a flexible orthotic where needed. The old style of orthotics that are inflexible and rigid block movement patterns that are important and they are often too hard and unforgiving. Plus, flexible orthotics are far more comfortable, so you’ll actually wear them if you need them!

Krista Sturday, Podiatrist

Krista Sturday podiatrist

If you want to get your body or injuries sorted from the ground up, then Krista is the podiatrist to see.

Krista recently moved back to beautiful Newcastle with her family to enjoy summers by the beach, after an extended sojourn in the alpine region of Victoria. Krista started her podiatry career 10 years ago as a high risk foot podiatrist at John Hunter Hospital and the local community centres. She then moved to Sydney and worked at Balmain Sport Medicine, one of Sydney’s premier sports medicine clinics.  There she focused on sports injury recovery and management of the lower limb for athletes ranging from marathon runners and football players, to recreational athletes competing in netball, tennis, soccer. She honed her skills in injury and blister prevention for people training for Oxfam Trail Walker, Blue Mountains Ultra Trail and the Coast 2 Coast walk. Krista has also worked with both the Sydney Kings basketball team and the West Tiger’s during their premiership winning season in 2005 as a remedial massage therapist.

Most recently, Krista founded a podiatry based custom ski boot company, now based in Victoria’s Falls Creek Ski Resort. This allows her to treat alpine skiing issues regarding, pain, performance and alignment for ski professionals, ski instructors, and ski patrol as well as recreational skiers and cross-country skiers.

Krista uses evidence-based practice for treating clients’ foot and ankle issues, which often starts with education about correct footwear and equipment. Krista likes to spend her time trail running, playing netball, swimming, mountain biking with her family, and of course skiing.
